Sherlock Holmes Silhouette Cookies

Sherlock Holmes is one of the most famous and enduring characters in English literature, inspiring real police forces, programmers, and scientists to follow his deductive examples. In popular scholarhip, Sherlock Holmes is said to have been born on January 6th, 1854, making this year his 159th birthday. This year I decided to make cookies utilizing his (supposedly) favourite tea, Lapsang Souchong. This delightful tea is smoked over pinewood, which gave it a strong flavour when I reduced in boiling water to a syrup that I used to colour and flavour the royal icing on which his famous, classic silhouette sits.

The cookies are classic vanilla spiced with orange, cardamom and cinnamon. I pulled out my 130 year old medical slides for these photos, I felt they certainly fit the theme!

Stay tuned for a photo tutorial on how I made the royal icing silhouettes!

A Little About Me

My name is Kaisha, and I love baking. Anything. Everything. My whole baking endeavor is a strive towards the beautiful yet fleeting. I love the idea of food as art, as it's something that takes effort to craft and yet can be gone in an instant, experienced by nearly all the senses. I like to take photos of my creations for posterity and sentimentality, as well as just for the pure joy it brings me when people are inspired to create something of their own!

In this blog you will find not just photos of the desserts and treats I've made, but also recipes, photo and video tutorials, and instructions for many (if not most) of the things I've made. I hope you will enjoy reading them as much as I will enjoy making them!
